It seems that the goal of developing a Mission Statement has fallen to me. This should teach me to keep my big mouth shut at meetings. Just kidding.

If anyone knows how to spell check on here, the info would be greatly appreciated..ha ha

Why do we need a Mission Statement?

A Mission Statement not only explains to the public exactly who we are, it also provides a clear roadmap of long term goals and a general plan to accomplish them.

Additionally, it is a reference point to prevent wandering into uncharted territory where we never meant to go. If a course of action is suggested, a mission statement provides a reference point to determine if the suggestion exceeds our mandate.

How do we develop ours?

I will take feedback from the group and consolidate here.

The initial rough draft is just that, a rough draft.

Once the the content is agreeable to all, the statement should be re-written and placed on its own page.

Please do not edit this page. Rather, use the discussion page comments section below or email me with suggestions.

Major "Doh!" on my part! The email address is: wolfear@wolfsrealm.com

Rough Conceptual Outline

1. Who are we?

Requirement: A section explaining who/what the 4Freedom group is

2. What are our goals?

Requirement: An explanation of what we hope to accomplish.

3. How do we intend to accomplish our goals?

Requirement: A general list of loose concepts for accomplishing #2.

Rough Draft

4Freedom is a group of like minded individuals, based in the Second Life community, who believe human knowledge only has value if it can be freely shared, freely used, and is free to build upon.

Advancement and equality among all people can only occur when technology, knowledge, and education are freely available to all without political and/or corporate interference or restrictions.

In accordance with our beliefs our mission, collectively and individually, shall be:

1. To Provide a cohesive, community oriented organization which is freely open to all;

2. To Share knowledge, ideas, and culture without prejudice;

3. To Educate the public about freedom of choice and what this freedom means to them individually as well as to society as a whole;

4. To Advocate the rights of individuals, software developers and other artists to freely create, share, collaborate, modify and decimate their work;

5. To Promote the freedom of computer users to make educated and informed choices, without restrictions, in the areas of information, software, and digital media;

6. To provide a publically accessible, centralized area, within Second Life, for sharing, education, social interaction and which serves as an open forum for discussion of related issues. This area shall provide such resources as are practical with regards to technical limitations, to the Second Life community at large;

7. To organize and promote events, either as a group or in concert with other like minded organizations and individuals, whose goal shall be that of increasing public awareness;

8. To make related information and resources available to the on-line community outside of Second Life;

Our ideas on software freedom are based on the ideals of the Free Software Foundation, whose philosophy is to give freedom to computer users by replacing proprietary software under restrictive licensing terms, with free software. Free software under this definition means software which gives the user the freedom to study, modify and share.

Updated: 4-6-2008:

4Freedom IRC

As was discussed as the March 16th meeting, I am willing to operated a 4FReedom IRC area.

Due to some techincal issues, I will be unable to build our own server for a while, so in the interim, this will have to be hosted on Freenode.

As I think I received a tentative "thumbs up" on this, I will register our group with Freenode no later than March 22nd following the March 23rd meeting, and start setup of some basic channels and services.

Those group members who wish to take on an active role in this, please contact me via email.

UPDATE: As was requested during the March 23,2008 meeting, I will try to post a list of reasons IRC may prove useful. Feel free to add to this list:

1. Easy access. IRC provides an easy, low-bandwidth method for public interaction. With plans being discussed for a full web site, IRC is a natural complement which allows real time interaction without restrictive hardware requirements.

2. 24/7 availability. Should the SL servers be down or if a group member should otherwise be unable to access SL, they have a fall back method of contacting the group or receiving information.

3. Help across time zones. With IRC and group members around the world, anyone can log, in at any time, and ask questions without having to log into the SL.

4. Large Groups. IRC can handle large numbers of participants without worrying about server loads.

5. Meetings. Group-only meetings can be held in private channels and public meetings are easily moderated.

6. Annoucements. Group channel topics offer an added alternative to SL group announcements.

7. Topical discussions. A channel topic can be set to discuss relevant current events.

UPDATE: The application for the 4Freedom group was submitted to Freenode on 3-24-2008.

UPDATE: Thanks to Toga, we have our IRC channel. Please join us on #4Freedom on the Freenode network
