Ubuntu 10.04 Release Party
From 4freedom
First of May 2010: 4Freedom's Ubuntu 10.04 Release Party with Mark Shuttleworth!!
The party for the Ubuntu 10.04 Release had a special guest. His name was Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Ubuntu. For this occasion we rented a sim which was said to host 50 people, but on the day of the party we found out that it could host no more than 20. We had no choice but to leave our new built sim and Deruub quickly built a big stage on Toga's land, but since we couldn't get set up a stream there Deruub had to build yet another one on the neighbouring land for the live musician OldWolf and the deejay Jottun. How do you mean stress?
Fiona was the first to speech
Catharina Jacobus: I would now like to Introduce Fiona Mc Masters to you; she will tell you her personal story about how she came to be an Ubunt user and an Ubuntu fan; so please me she have your attention
Catharina Jacobus: podium is yours Fiona
Deruub Pastorelli whispers: jay
Fiona McMasters: Thanks, Cath, hrmmmmmm
Fiona McMasters: G-g-g-guess it's my t-t-t-turn now.
Catharina Jacobus: hehe no need to nervous Fiona :)
Fiona McMasters: Ladies and Gentlemen,
Fiona McMasters: My name is Fiona McMasters as You might have guessed either from the program, or... uhm... name tag.
Fiona McMasters: I'm a member of the 4freedom group, a group that promotes and spreads freedom in Second Life.
Fiona McMasters: We are Your host today because we want to celebrate the release of the brandnew ubuntu 10.04 "Lucid Lynx" together with You.
Fiona McMasters: I know it's Saturday Night, everyone is keen on dancing, so I'll keep my speech short :-)
Summer Renobaum: woooo!
Fiona McMasters: When I was a wee girrrl I realized, I was different...
Fiona McMasters: I didn't play with dolls... climbed trees and fought boyz.
Fiona McMasters: When I got my first computer, I thought, everything is blue, I want a different colour!!!
Fiona McMasters: Green.
Summer Renobaum: the god damn screen is blue!
Fiona McMasters: Green was my first choice. A Germany-based GNU/Linux distribution, hard to handle back then, with a Rotten Package Management. Dropped it.
Fiona McMasters: Went back to blue and sulked.
Fiona McMasters: A few years later a neighbour (nice guy, phew!!! A little small though) introduced Debian and ubuntu to me. He was studying informatics and could write little scripts that said something like
"Hello Fiona!" in a terminal. I was deeply impressed and made him a sandwich.
Fiona McMasters: His euphory for GNU/Linux operating systems infected me. On his suggestion I tried the brown flavour of GNU/Linux.
Fiona McMasters: Ever since I'm one of the happiest users of ubuntu. Back then it took some fiddling around to get certain things to work (5 years ago already!).
Fiona McMasters: Nowadays I'm even happier, since most things, i.e. hardware, just works out of the box: Graphic card, sound, webcam, WLAN, TV-cards, even UMTS-sticks...
Fiona McMasters: ubuntu comes as a basic system, and after installation You'll decide, which programs You need for Your daily work and fun from huge repositories!
Fiona McMasters: Look, I can do whatever I want with ubuntu without being terrorized with commercials, trojans and viruses.
Fiona McMasters: Uhm, I can organize the photogallery of my ((((ex)ex)ex)ex)ex-boyfriends with F-Spot, listen to my music via Rhythmbox.
Fiona McMasters: You can have killer applications like OpenOffice.org (office suite), Gimp (graphic manipulation), Blender (free open source 3D content creation suite), which are at least
Fiona McMasters: comparable to their commercial counterparts (if not better).
Moelwyn Sodwind: Better
Fiona McMasters: I keep in touch with my rrriot girl friends in Poland and India via IRC, ICQ, jabber, MSN, facebook, twitter with Empathy, Gwibber, Pidgin or... or, or
In fact, for most applications (free) alternatives are available, and YOU decide, which suits Your purpose and taste most!
I can even watch DVB-T television via me-tv.
Fiona McMasters: Picasa, GoogleEarth, Skype, Second Life??? No problem with ubuntu :-)
Fiona McMasters: Well, actually apart from making a good cup o' coffee, a pint o' beer or hoovering my flat, ubuntu does nearly everything for me.
And that's only for the time being, since computers don't have taps or trunks yet.
Mark will look after that.
Flight Band: All Go
Fiona McMasters: The sky's the limit, and in a world without walls and fences, who needs windows and gates???
Troy Childs: Say the Linux Lords preach!
Troy Childs: :P
Fiona McMasters: So, that's why I love ubuntu and I'm very grateful to all the people who constantely contribute to this wonderful distribution!!!
Fiona McMasters: Thanks, Mark, and my kindest regards to Your team and all developers.
Ran Bookmite: Not to mention it requires extensive computer know-how. User-friendly my purple butt x3
Fiona McMasters: Oki, finished. Party.
Summer Renobaum: Woohoo!
Catharina Jacobus: claps!
Catharina Jacobus: thanks Fiona!
Pixoul Hax: w00t!

Pixoul Hax: Cath, I'll ping him on the internal Canonical IRC network...
droolproof Blackheart: worse, switch to OSX
Fiona McMasters: Jotunn dear, music???
Damis Zimmer: Or you could accept all OS's as tools which don't nee factionalizing conflict.
Catharina Jacobus: Well I have mailed him and asked him to call me if he had trouble coming back in
Jotunn Qi: ah, one min, having to change the server max listeners, one sec
Moelwyn Sodwind: Damis: Blimey...Thats a radical idea...
Catharina Jacobus: But he was also somewhere with rl friends in Belgium.. so I hope they did not end up in a belgium beer pub..

Mark Laburnum: we can make it the best - fastest - cleanest - most useful - most powerful desktop, i believe
Fiona McMasters: Uhm, some troubles with my graphic card... shouldn't be Your problem though... LOL
Mark Laburnum: we still have a way to go, but i think lucid shows we can make big leaps
Mark Laburnum: every six months
Mark Laburnum: another step forward
Grunt Ultsch: I like 10.04, but I wonder why the buttons of the windows are on the left
Mark Laburnum: it wouldn't really be possible for one person or one team or one company
Fiona McMasters: Grunt???
Mark Laburnum: but we have about 10,000 people on our side
Mark Laburnum: including all of you
Summer Renobaum: wow
Mark Laburnum: and i think that's about enough to win
Grunt Ultsch: Ubuntu is a winner!!
droolproof Blackheart: w00t!
Catharina Jacobus: of course we will win :)
Mark Laburnum: :-)
Summer Renobaum: "we have a winner!!"
yorgen Audeburgh has upgraded 4 puters already, and counting!
Mark Laburnum: so, that's what i care about
Mark Laburnum: i hope it's useful for all of y ou
Mark Laburnum: and i appreciate how much people put into making it amazing
Mark Laburnum: thank you
Fiona McMasters: Mark, may I ask, why are You doing it????
Summer Renobaum: I love the customability on it
yorgen Audeburgh: nah.. thank YOU!! woohoo!
Mark Laburnum: Fiona: right thing for me, for others
Mark Laburnum: and right thing for the time
Fiona McMasters: I love it, yes! But why?
Mark Laburnum: if we're right it will bring together a lot of the things i care about
Mark Laburnum: amazing technology
Mark Laburnum: amazing people
Mark Laburnum: and interesting economics
yorgen Audeburgh: and bluetooth still works!
Grunt Ultsch: And free software
yorgen Audeburgh: was kind of worried about that
Mark Laburnum: i'd like it to be profitable AND cool AND ahead of the curve
Mark Laburnum: Grunt: of course
droolproof Blackheart: thanks for getting the libimobiledevice package in 10.04. now i can synch to this stupid iphone i have.
Grunt Ultsch: You should come here more often
Milan Hoxley: is it profitable now?
Summer Renobaum: MarK I been an activist for 10 years,.. and this is best grass roots tech campagin ever!
Mark Laburnum: Grunt: now i have a ticket :-)
Catharina Jacobus: yes we would love ubuntu to particpate more in virtual worlds
Mark Laburnum: Milan: no, but ubuntu itself is close
Catharina Jacobus: we are also looking at osgrid because SL gets a bit too restricted...
Troy Childs: yeah i bet it bring more from the dark side (windows and osx) lol
Mark Laburnum: what questions do you guys have?
Grunt Ultsch: Now that we know how to find you we will ask you for other Ubuntu parties
Damis Zimmer: Mark, do you think that Ubuntu is or has the potential in the near future to knock the complacency out of the proprietary OS vendors and open up a lot more choice in the software world?
yorgen Audeburgh: i started with ubuntu back in the feisty days .. memories .. bunch of headaches too! hah but am still here
Catharina Jacobus: So if Canonical would sponsor us a server for Osgrid that would be great
Grunt Ultsch: Man, I still have the 5.04
Mark Laburnum: @Damis, there are a lot of changes that are keeping the traditional guys running
Mark Laburnum: hopefully, we are one of them :-)
SkyBinary Nightfire: do you have a dialog with apple mark?
Damis Zimmer: :)
Fiona McMasters: Mark, will the ubuntu promise last foerever-ever-ever???
Mark Laburnum: @SkyBinary - not a major one. We talk about tools now and then.
Mark Laburnum: Fiona: as long as i have anything to do with it
Grunt Ultsch: Hurray!!
Fiona McMasters: :-)))))))))
Grunt Ultsch: Hmmm, you already stepped back in december...
Mark Laburnum: only as CEO of Canonical. Jane is handling that very well. I'm focused on our strategy and design
Fiona McMasters: Since I#m not much older than You, that'll be okay... LOL
Summer Renobaum: Mark, you working with any major PC distubuters to make Ubuntu an option for an OS system?
Grunt Ultsch: Hurray for Jane!!
Mark Laburnum: Summer: yes
SkyBinary Nightfire: what can i do to give something back?
Ronnie Pawpad: I Noticed dell do offer it
Mark Laburnum: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ContributeToUbuntu
Jotunn Qi: you could give me cookies
Mark Laburnum: @SkyBinary that's the best place to start
Kiski Wylder: lol
Moelwyn Sodwind: Do you think that there are too many Linux distros and that the talent should merge together? Or do you think that more is better for innovation?
yorgen Audeburgh: launchpad!
droolproof Blackheart: Mark you should try getting lenovo to put your OS on their thinkpads. My T42p is very happy with ubuntu. shhh that's technically an IBM ;)
Mark Laburnum: Moelwyn: i think it's best to build on strength, but keep some space for divergence.. that's why we encourage folks to use PPA's if they want to try something different with Ubuntu
yorgen Audeburgh: chromuim ftW!
Mark Laburnum: droolproof: we just started shipping on Lenovo machines in China ;-)
Summer Renobaum: Mark ever concider launching your own brand of PC
Summer Renobaum: ?
droolproof Blackheart: awesome!
Mark Laburnum: Summer: nope, better to work with industry
Fiona McMasters: Mark, may I mention, that's an honour and an fantastic opportunity to have You here tonight
Summer Renobaum: Seiously I seen you on you tube
droolproof Blackheart: yeah this is really awesome.
yorgen Audeburgh: mark: what do you think of chromium replacing firefox in the future...?
Kiski Wylder: This is incredible :D
Summer Renobaum: and you seem to be a fantastic upbeat person
Mark Laburnum: Fiona :-)
Milan Hoxley: the astronout flies!
Damis Zimmer: Mark, (I common question I would think) Will Mp3 and DVD playback support ever come with out of the box functionality or do legal issues prevent this?
Catharina Jacobus: oeps..
Mark Laburnum: yorgen: we should discuss it at UDS the week after next
Kiski Wylder: lol, thought someone orbited him for a sec, lol
Moelwyn Sodwind: Are you planning any more trips into outer space...?
Catharina Jacobus: Mark, would you like an UFO?
Troy Childs: hard to get them liinden space legs lol
Kiski Wylder: lol
Grunt Ultsch: Please don't drive Mark nuts
Emixam Winterwolf: why purple ? it's a fag color :(
Catharina Jacobus: i got a spare one..
Mark Laburnum: Moelwyn: not in the short term
Mark Laburnum: and space feels a little more natural than this in 3 fps :-)
Kiski Wylder: lmao, i bet
Moelwyn Sodwind: lol... Gotta love zero gravity
Mark Laburnum: Emixam: charming
Catharina Jacobus: and no lag in space I guess..
You decline Ubuntu 10.04 Release Party from A group member named Sin Speculaas.
Pixoul Hax: Mark, Sciri from Team IS here...I'll have to tune your system to get your FPS up when I touch down next week in Brussels. ;)
Toga Yorkshire: I'm getting 19FPS now
Kiski Wylder: ahh, but no poseballs either, lol :P
Mark Laburnum: i'm just amazed it came straight up, no problems
Troy Childs is cruseing at 40FPS
Mark Laburnum: so, top requests for 10.10?
Milan Hoxley: please give the web team a call to update the logo on the website
Deruub Pastorelli: yep
Ronnie Pawpad: Codename it ubuntu X :D
Troy Childs: lame lol
Ronnie Pawpad: just to miff off Apple lol
Deruub Pastorelli: i would love to see the hippo opensim viewer in the repo
Kiski Wylder: lol
SkyBinary Nightfire: good point derrub
Mark Laburnum: deruub: is it packaged already?
Summer Renobaum: Mark,.. any news on furth integrating WIne?
Summer Renobaum: further*
Deruub Pastorelli: jep i can gibve more info
Fiona McMasters: omv is...
Troy Childs: what i like to see personal is chooise in the install. to use pulseaduio or to not. lol
Mark Laburnum: Summer: Scott Ritchie is the guy to ask, really
Kiski Wylder: omggg@ pulseaudio
Damis Zimmer: Integrated mp3 and dvd playback would be great if it isn't held back by legal issues.
droolproof Blackheart: my only I'd like to see in 10.10 is even better ATI open source drivers which are coming along well so I'm not worried about it heh
Deruub Pastorelli: hippo is most free of all
Mark Laburnum: Troy: I'd like to see us fix PulseAudio :-)
Jano Putzo: I echo the pulse issue. I'd like to see it optional.
Damis Zimmer: Definately remove pulseaudio :)
Kiski Wylder: if i could have gotten my hands around the neck of the guy... lol
Summer Renobaum: how do I get in touch with him?
Troy Childs: so would i but chooise can be stimilateing to make sure everything set up correctly if no one wants to use pulse
Catharina Jacobus: Is there someone assigned to virtual worlds within Canonical or Ubuntu?
Deruub Pastorelli: i just email info about that pack?
Toga Yorkshire: Try to avoid using Mono for 1010
Mark Laburnum: pulse mostly works for me. just have to remember to tell it about new devices when i plug in usb headsets
droolproof Blackheart: ooo good one toga!
Grunt Ultsch: I would like to ask a question but I am sure it has been asked so often to Mark already
Moelwyn Sodwind: Touchscreen and more truly 'free' alternatives
Catharina Jacobus: Hi Sin, welcome
Mark Laburnum: nobody dedicated to virtual worlds i'm afraid
Damis Zimmer: Maybe a system set up proceadure during installation would help, choosing sound drivers, etc.
Mark Laburnum: but Sciri knows something about it
Grunt Ultsch: Hey sin, huggzz
Catharina Jacobus: ok, maybe for future
Milan Hoxley: uPad
Mark Laburnum: Milan: that's a cool idea
Troy Childs: ANyways as for picks i dun think this is in ubuntu hand but gnone. i wanna change login screen with ease like could in 9.04.
Pixoul Hax: Indeed Mark, if you're interested we could discuss something about it at UDS.
Ronnie Pawpad: Mark: Pulseaudio is a bit of a mix bag, i found it to be my worst nightmare on ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10, and just removed it though it seems to work better now on lucid, at least for me.
Troy Childs: *gnome
Deruub Pastorelli: about virtual worlds is most importend to know that its not sl wich is free
Mark Laburnum: i'll announce something new and interesting at UDS, that will get us a step closer to a uPad ;-)
Deruub Pastorelli: opensim is one of the opensource options
Mark Laburnum: ok
Kiski Wylder: awesome!!
Milan Hoxley: interesting
Summer Renobaum: Reaosn why I as Mark is I DJ infront of very large croweds, but I am partaily hearing impared, so I go to use specifice computer programs to "see" music. If Ubuntu could work with on that I would full on do what I can t promote Ubuntu at evernts ..
Padman Baddingham: can't wait :-)
Milan Hoxley: an announcement for an announcement :)
Summer Renobaum: ask*
Moelwyn Sodwind: grub2 to stick around long enough for me to understand it...
Mark Laburnum: Moelwyn: apparently it's the future...
Moelwyn Sodwind: heheh... yeah :-)
Mark Laburnum: well, you all look amazing
SkyBinary Nightfire: aww shucks
Moelwyn Sodwind: By the time I get the hang it'll be grub3
Mark Laburnum: so i feel i should get off the podium, and wander around a bit
Catharina Jacobus: i allways have a hard time to believe that Linux market share is just around 1%; what you think about that Mark?
