Talk:Representing the FSF

Samira Kirax:

my vision of a slogan / motto / subject the "FSF-Homeplace" will be built round is

Nature is Full Perm!

Around that we'll build a them park with examples how nature copies and adapts even across species to EVOLVE, to show that evolution and development (of human as a part of nature) is only possible, if it profits from all sources without any restrictions. examples: mimicry & mimes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mimic#Similar_terms)

Like that we'll introduce to the subject of FSF. The FSF revers to ethical & social aspects of their movement http://www.fsf.org/licensing/essays/free-software-for-freedom.html

so: To have not an "only software" introduction & therefore reach a broader range of people I've chosen that "nature inspired" approach... also, of course I like natural shapes (what headquarters will be built like) & RL architecture and technics as well started a while ago to copy nature for better buildings or technical invention, so called bionics. More...as I know SL so far there are not a lot places having the same or a similar approach.

Welcome Area

I imagine a welcome & information place on ground with a very brief introduction inside FSF and in actual campaigns. examples: drm http://defectivebydesign.org/, bad vista http://badvista.fsf.org/

on this point the user can also decide how to reach headquarters (sky) by short TP version or long them-park version.

Theme Park

1. TP of course is easily to imagine and to build.

2. Theme park itself I imagine as a loopy way up, riding a ...?... guided by the GNU. Stop points with examples like up described on that way. This points might be expanded by time as the concept shows positive outcome. Minimum should be 2-3...user should have fun and maybe get some goodies on the way like a cool free texture, an exclusive sculpture or a snapshot of himself..

Headquarters

Up at the headquarters user is sensitized to the main message, why restriction on software is absolutely wired and can be introduced to free alternatives by FSF as well as to their campaigns, events, ... ?

shape of that building may be a kind of shell (snail...maybe there are better ideas?)...mostly I like to build something really not seen before in SL & of course I've not seen all SIMS till now ;-)

@ all: please do a little creative brain work till Sunday...or you've to build sth real difficult *lol*...but think about something round ;-)

By the way: sound on parcel I'd like to be open radio or something like that...tour guide might once be 1:1 using voice...depending of course how much investment the FSF's willing to put in-world?

All clear so far?

Comment..

With regards to the bad vista, "no windows" logos, windows sucks and other such things, I feel that the negative dogma is not what should be focused on. We should be showing what's great about free software not wasting prims on why windows is bad. I also feel that the negativity puts people off and nothing of great value is learned when we have yet another prim with the crossed out windows logo.

Jing

No bright idea's of mine about the FSF building yet (but they will come!), but I very much would like to say that I fully agree with Jing's comment. Windows or Vista may be mentioned, it is not a taboo, but we don't need any Windows bashing. Of all 3 examples Jing gives, 'bad Vista', 'No Windows logos' and 'Windows sucks', I also think that they create bad energy and therefore I would like them to be avoided. Let's show what's great about free software, like Jing says, and not waste our time and energy on negativity.

I have thought of an idea for the FSF building. I think it would be fun if there were many computers standing around. Each monitor screen has some text, like 'Richard Stallman speeches at UCLA' or 'GPL', etcetera. When you click on the screen you get a video stream of the speech, or a window opening a page of the FSF website with info about the GPL. And as far as logo's are concerned: remember that the symbol of the FSF is a gnew and not a penguin. The gnew represents the whole operating system, including the kernel, and also many applications. It also represents the the basic idea's behind the whole Free Software Movement, including the GPL, whereas a penguin represents only the kernel. So no penguins in the FSF building, it is going to be a gnew building. Of course penguins are not taboo. I would like to suggest a monitor with the word 'Linux' on its screen, which would be linked to a page where it is explained that the commonly used name Linux is actually wrong, since it refers to the kernel only. This monitor seems to me a good place for a penguin or two, one on the screen and another one on the computer for example.

Samira:

ok, I agree with good vibes & positive messages a lot. I guess what you can see so far on "my" buildings is not really focused to MS...the stroken Logo... I had other comments inworld as well (mostly from "visitors"), but if majority doesn't like to see I'll kill it (3prims, is not spend that much!), just a few back-comments from my side before the meeting today:

if one is representing FSF is clear from action page of FSF itself http://www.fsf.org/campaigns, that these points -like mentioned by Trade before, http://4freedom.a.wiki-site.com/index.php/FSF_Architecture -

must be part of representation!

No DRM & BadVista are two of most popular campaigns...to my point of view this is not MS-bashing...specially DRM is a thing making us going exactely towards the "nice" little future-scenario Stallman's described under: the right to read http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/right-to-read.html

DRM (& as Vista comes right with it is somehow the same) in my view is a danger to democracy because it restrains people sharing their knowlege!

Like I mentioned before is my sight that:

1. 08:15 sl-users are not interested too much in changing to free, except their very own rights (to hear their music, play their games,...) are affected

2. they will not just not change, they will neighter watch a video of Stallmans' if you don't attract them with "goodies" to come round to the sim

3. I like some "educational" way as well, but one must be "prepared" by fun & enterntainment...as we heard on meeting last sunday what (some) people want is "action"...unfortunately speeches are not what I guess people think about ?

4. so them-park (I try to create parts already: karate-ball, turning-viewpoint) where I'm hopping from screen to screen, listening & watching to Stallman, even on a gnu, does not attract me so far, but I'm not representativ of course

but most I want to reach & inform as many people in SL as possible!

anything -inside some "ethical" range of course- what helps to reach that goal is ok so far to me

FSFE (European sister) @ moment for example has more focused the open standards http://fsfeurope.org/projects/os/os.en.html but DRM is also a favorite subject specially in France & Germany/Switzerland http://stopdrm.info/

I made contact to president of FSFE last week like I mentioned to few of you. Georg Greve refered for BadVista to US respective FSF itself. He also mentioned DRM-campaign first of all & sent me link as well to pictures of No-DRM events all over Europe. For SL he did not care too much so far, as one point he mentioned, that client was not free long time. He's been happy nethertless to hear about our work & invited me

a) to come round to his office in Zurich &

b) to the annually meeting of FSFE in Zurich on 8th of June

I however will take part there -maybe this could be a chance to meet some of you cause EM (football) will take place same time in Switzerland ;-)
